How to start rowing: a beginner’s guide

What does the first lesson look like for someone who has never rowed, what to wear and what to watch out for? A short guide for those who want to start on the Bostancı waterfront.

Rowing is one of the rare sports that works the whole body, spares the joints and rests the mind. And you do not need an athletic background to start.

What does the first lesson look like?

In the first session your coach introduces you to the boat and equipment. After a short technique briefing on land, you go on the water with the safety boat alongside. Your aim on day one is not speed but feeling the balance and understanding the rowing cycle (catch, drive, finish, recovery).

What to wear

  • A fitted, wind-resistant top
  • Leggings or tight shorts (loose fabric can catch in the slide)
  • Trainers that can get wet
  • Sunscreen and a cap

What to keep in mind

  • Arrive with a light meal, not on an empty or full stomach.
  • Bring water; you will not notice sweating on the water.
  • Listen to the coach’s safety briefing; a life jacket is mandatory.

Progress in rowing comes from rowing correctly, not from rowing a lot.
